Ingredients You'll Need
- Greek Yogurt: My favorite is whole-fat Greek yogurt for its velvety mouthfeel.
- Cherries: Use fresh or frozen cherries—make sure to remove the pit!
- Orange juice: This special ingredient adds a beautiful bright note and all the natural sweetness.
- Vanilla extract: This is optional. You can also sub for a vanilla bean.
- Maple syrup: For extra sweetness.
- Sea salt: To balance the sweetness.
- Almonds: For garnish.
See the recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
- Step 1: To make compote, combine the cherries, orange juice, vanilla, maple syrup, and sea salt in a saucepan.
- Step 2: Place over medium heat. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer until the liquid has reduced by half, and has thickened, about 15 minutes.
Helpful tip: Let the compote cool completely before enjoying it. Warm compote will be runny, while a cooled compote will have a thicker, richer consistency that's perfect for spooning over yogurt.
If you're short on time, you can chill the compote in the refrigerator for a quicker cool down.
Substitutions and Variations
There are so many ways to enjoy this Greek yogurt bowl. Here are a few suggestions:
- Nuts and seeds- Use pistachios, chia seeds, hemp seeds, or cashews for that additional crunch.
- No added sugar - omit the added maple syrup to reduce the amount of sweetness in the compote.
- Lemon - If you enjoy sour, tart fruit, add a teaspoon of lemon juice and the zest for extra tart compote.
Serving Ideas and Enjoyment
If you would like to take this recipe to the next level, here are a few ideas.
- Breakfast: Spoon warm or chilled cherry compote over plain yogurt, granola, or oatmeal for a delicious and nutritious breakfast.
- Anytime Treat: Enjoy your compote with yogurt as a healthy and refreshing afternoon snack.
- Dessert: Top ice cream, cheesecake, or pound cake with cherry compote for a simple and elegant dessert.
- Savory: Believe it or not, cherry compote can also complement savory dishes! Try serving it alongside roasted chicken, or duck for a sweet and tart contrast.
How to Store
Prepped Yogurt Bowls (without fruit): If you'd like to prep the yogurt base ahead of time, you can portion it into individual containers with lids and store them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. However, keep in mind the granola or other crunchy toppings might lose some crispness.
Storing the Orange-Kissed Cherries:
Let the compote cool completely before storing.
Transfer the compote to an airtight container and refrigerate it for up to 3 days.
Assembling When Ready:
When ready to enjoy your yogurt bowl, assemble it with the chilled yogurt and a dollop of the chilled cherry compote.
Reheat the compote in the microwave for 10-15 seconds or until slightly hot for a cold and warm contrast to your bowl.
