Although we have freshly baked bread at every corner here in Turkiye, my family still favors homemade rice with nearly every meal.

I enjoy making it. It’s easy. My girls gobble it up and it goes with nearly EVERYTHING—even soup!

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Rice: use your favorite white rice. It’s important to know that some rice cooks quicker than others. This recipe should act as a guide. Read the manufactures package to get the exact cooking time.
  • Butter: will add a delicious buttery flavor, of course.
  • Olive oil: will ensure the butter doesn’t burn when frying the rice.
  • Salt: to make it tasty, duh!
  • Water: if you use chicken or vegetable broth, add less salt.

Steps to Make Perfect Stove-Top White Rice

1.) First, soak the rice in cold water for 10 minutes. Once the rice is finished soaking, rinse the rice until the water runs clear. This step will not only clean the rice, but it will get rid of most of the starch, resulting in fluffier rice.

2.) Next, add olive oil and butter to the pot stir-fry. Fry until the rice turns slightly golden. This step will add a very tasty buttery flavor.

3.) Add salt and water. Give a generous stir to incorporate, then place the lid on top and cook for 15 minutes on medium-low heat (more emphasis on the lower heat).

4.) Once your rice has these beautiful holes, turn off the heat. Cover the rice with a paper towel to steep for an additional 5 minutes.

Don’t forget to fluff your buttery rice with a fork and serve it with any of your favorite meals.

For extra buttery flavor, add a tablespoon of butter to the rice while it is hot.

  1. Start by adding 3 cups of water to the rice. Soak for 10 minutes. When ready, rinse and drain until the rice from the water runs clear. 

  2. Next, in a small pot, over medium heat, add the olive oil and butter. Once the butter has melted, add the rice and salt. Stir-fry until the rice is slightly golden, about 2-3 minutes. 

  3. Add 3 cups of water and stir the rice. Cook until a simmer. Once a simmer reaches, lower the heat to medium-low, give a final stir and cover the pot with a lid and cook for 10-15 minutes. 

  4. Once there are small holes at the top of the rice, turn off the heat.  Remove the lid and place a paper towel over the pot and cover with the lid for 5 minutes. 

  5. Finally, remove the paper towel, fluff the rice with a fork, and enjoy right away.
